What the Packers Must Do to Become Super Bowl Contenders This Offseason

Leading Up to the NFL Draft

As the 2025 NFL Draft descends on Green Bay, the Packers find themselves at a crucial crossroads. After an injury-riddled 2024 campaign that saw their season derailed early—including a Week 1 injury to quarterback Jordan Love and a torn ACL to wideout Christian Watson—Green Bay needs to make bold, strategic moves to elevate itself into true Super Bowl contention. Here’s a breakdown of the three biggest moves the Packers should make this offseason to maximize their window.

1. Resolve the Jaire Alexander Situation—One Way or Another

When healthy, Jaire Alexander is arguably one of the best corners in the league. He’s shadowed elite receivers like Justin Jefferson and made them non-factors. But the issue has been consistency—he simply hasn’t been available often enough.

Green Bay must decide now: either commit to rehabilitating and retaining Alexander as a centerpiece of the defense or move on. If they believe his durability issues aren’t going away, they should explore a trade—possibly on draft night. His value could help the Packers land a first-round pick or package him in a deal to trade up. Whether it’s a cornerback replacement or a top-tier wide receiver, maximizing Alexander’s value now could pay off in a big way later.

2. Draft Smart at WR—Or Don’t Draft One at All (Unless It’s Tetairoa McMillan)

The Packers have a wealth of young talent at wide receiver—Romeo Doubs, Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, and Dontayvion Wicks among them—but what they still lack is a true outside red zone threat. Christian Watson stretches the field but hasn’t proven to be that physical, go-up-and-get-it receiver. Doubs is more of a savvy route-runner in the mold of Greg Jennings. And others on the roster echo similar styles.

That’s why the only receiver worth targeting early is Tetairoa McMillan. McMillan fits the mold of the big, outside threat the Packers need—think Calvin Johnson or Drake London. He’s got the size, physicality, and hands to dominate in the red zone. Unless McMillan is available, the Packers should avoid using premium capital on a WR that would just duplicate skill sets already on the roster.

3. Trade the 23rd Overall Pick—Up or Down

Stuck in the NFL’s “no-man’s land” of the 23rd pick, the Packers face a familiar dilemma. They’re too good to pick in the top 10, yet not quite elite enough to consistently contend for a Super Bowl. Staying put in the middle of the first round rarely yields game-changers.

Option A: Trade up.
If McMillan begins to slide—past teams like Carolina at 10 or into the mid-teens—Green Bay should be aggressive. They’ll need to leapfrog teams like the Broncos and Chargers who also need receiver help. A package including the 23rd pick and a late-round selection might be enough. Including Alexander in a deal could sweeten the pot, but pulling that off on draft night would require precise timing.

Option B: Trade down.
If McMillan’s gone or Green Bay doesn’t want to overpay to move up, trading back and accumulating more picks could be the right move. GM Brian Gutekunst has shown he values volume in the draft, and this year’s class—while not top-heavy—is deep on Day 2. Extra picks could help the Packers bolster multiple positions or stash prospects for the future.

Final Thoughts

With the draft being held at historic Lambeau Field, this is a rare opportunity for the Packers to make a splash in front of their fans. Whether they choose to double down on their defensive identity or go all-in on giving Jordan Love a legit red zone weapon, the decisions they make this offseason could shape the next era of Packers football.

As a fan, this draft feels pivotal. It’s not just about who they pick—it’s about how aggressive they are in chasing greatness. One or two big moves could be the difference between another one-and-done playoff exit and a Super Bowl run.

Let’s see if Gutekunst is ready to go bold.

What do you think? Should the Packers go all-in for Tetairoa McMillan? Is trading Jaire Alexander too risky? Drop your thoughts in the comments and share this article with a fellow Packers fan!
